The Database of International Statistical Activities (DISA) lists the activities of over 30 statistical organizations active in the UNECE region. Updated every year, DISA is a coherent catalogue of planned work in international statistics over the coming year.  
1. Demographic and social statistics (FAO)

1.5 Income and consumption

Food Consumption and Food Security Statistics Derived from Household Surveys

Ongoing methodological work:
• Methodological work is focused not only on the estimation of food deprivation new FAO methodology to assess undernourishment but also on the assessment of food consumption quality. This methodology will be shared with national statistical organizations to estimate food deprivation as defined by the Millennium Development Goals indicator number 1.9 at national and sub-national levels for targeting food insecure population groups.
• Technical assistance is being provided through FAO's capacity building activities projects.
Priority objectives:
• Priority has been given to the preparation of new methodological materials for implementing data processing and statistical analysis modules using computing statistical packages
• Updated information on the web page on capacity building activities on food consumption and security statistics, in particular as part of the Household Survey Programme:

2. Economic statistics (FAO)

2.4 Sectoral statistics

2.4.1 Agriculture, forestry, fisheries

Agricultural Statistics

Ongoing methodological work:
• FAO has been developing, in cooperation with development partners, developed and developing countries, a Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics. The Global Strategy will be available in early 2010.
• FAO will continue to concentrate on the revamping of FAOSTAT during 2010.

Priority objectives:
• Additional subject specific statistical modules of data, expanded coverage, improve the quality and timeliness of disseminated statistics.
• Emphasis will be placed on the implementation of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics, especially capacity building.
• Review of the major items included in the Agricultural Resources Domain for machinery, pesticides, labour and gender.

New work to be undertaken in 2010:
• FAO will develop, in cooperation with development partners, developing and developed countries, an Implementation Plan of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics.
• Methodological Review of World Census of Agriculture 2000.

Meeting to be organized in 2010:
• An Expert Consultation on Gender Disaggregated Data will be organized in Budapest, Hungary in 2010.

Dissemination and coordination of data collection
Ongoing work:
The dissemination programme for food and agriculture statistics is primarily via the FAOSTAT database available at ( The FAO Statistical Yearbook consolidates FAO's agriculture, forestry and fishery statistics.
• Work will continue on the development of metadata on crops and livestock as well as prices and resources, which underlies the data disseminated by FAOSTAT.
• Major work continues on upgrading and developing the Statistics Division's webpage

Priority objectives:
Publication of new undernourished estimates and FAOSTAT data series.

Fishery statistics

Ongoing work:
• Data collection, evaluation, analyses and dissemination fishery related information - capture fisheries production, aquaculture production, commodities and trade, disposition, food-consumption of fishery products, fishers and fleets.
• Annual release of FAO Yearbook-Fishery Statistics for Capture Fisheries production, Aquaculture Production, Commodities and Apparent Consumption.
• On-line dissemination of statistics through FIGIS (Fisheries Global Information System, together with various software for database handling, data collection and analyses. Data and software are also available as complementary CD version. Substantial update of the statistics dissemination software (FishStat) is in process since 2009.
• On-line dissemination of statistical guidelines, standards, and classifications relevant to fisheries and aquaculture, together with fisheries and stock status information provided from international and regional fisheries bodies through partnership arrangement of FIRMS (Fisheries Resources Monitoring System).
• Technical assistance for fishery and aquaculture data collection and monitoring system development along the line with the Strategy for Improving Information on Status and Trends of Capture Fisheries (Strategy-STF) and Strategy and Outline Plan for Improving Information on Status and Trends of Aquaculture (Strategy-STA).
Priority objectives:
• Continued improvement of the quality and timeliness of FAO-collated fishery statistics and information. Specific emphasis of this year includes re-construction of fleet statistics, re-designing capture and aquaculture production, and integration of catch statistics maintained by Regional Fishery Bodies in unified format.
• Coordination to enhance and update global standards for terminology, data requirement, and guideline for the purpose of monitoring of and supporting management for aquaculture and capture fishery sectors.
• Promotion of the implementation of Strategy-STF and Strategy-STA to strengthen monitoring and data collection capacity especially in Africa, Asia, and to a lesser extent in the Caribbean and South America, and some countries in East Europe.

Forestry Statistics

Ongoing work:
• Annual release of forest products on-line statistical databases - production, trade and bilateral trade matrices, available at:
• Yearbook of Forest Products (1 volume), hardcopy and on-line version
• Complementary CD-Rom version, the database containing all FAOSTAT-Forestry statistics.
• Pulp and Paper Capacity Survey 2009-2014 (1 Volume), hardcopy and on-line version.
• A national workshop on capacity building for collection and reporting on forest products statistics is scheduled for 19-23 April 2010 in Mexico .

Government expenditure on agriculture & Official Development Assistance to Agriculture (ODA)
Continued compilation of government expenditure on agriculture by sub-sectors of main purpose activities, subsidies or taxes on agriculture, total government expenditures
• Establish and maintain data regularly with details that relate to concepts and methodology.
• Classify by different purpose activities.
• Collect data on subsidies and taxes by activities.
• Derive share of agriculture on total expenditures.
• Monitor and track by reporting regularly on reports and publications.
• Data on ODA is maintained in collaboration with OECD/World Bank and Regional Banks.
• Data on ODA is published.
• Data on ODA is regularly provided to the Office of the Director-General and many other users.

2.7 Prices

Agricultural Producer Prices

New activities:
• The agricultural price domain was redesigned with a new methodological database framework.
• The new domain will comprise new price concepts (e.g. consumer prices) which will link different price datasets (e.g. input prices, output prices, trade unit values) and will include new derived indicators and investigation of value-chains in agriculture.

Subnational codes:
• As part of the FAOSTAT updating, CountrySTAT will incorporate GAUL codes (Global Administrative Unit Layer) into various modules for users interested in working with subnational data.

3.4 Yearbooks and similar compendia

Essential data series

The FAO Statistical Yearbook consolidates FAO's agriculture, forestry and fishery statistics. Maintenance and updating the essential data series on demographic estimates and projections, macroeconomic aggregates and prices received by farmers, agricultural production and trade. Other time series, which will be updated, pertain to land use, farm machinery, fertilizer and pesticides statistics, estimates of number of undernourished and other economic data.

4. Methodology of data collection, processing, dissemination and analysis (FAO)

4.2 Classifications


FAO has been cooperating closely with the UN Expert Group and Technical Subgroup on International Economic and Social Classifications and taking the lead in the work on classifications in agriculture by contributing its proposal for ISIC Rev 4.0 and CPC revisions in the area of crop, animal, fishery and forestry production and products; the proposal has been adopted for inclusion in the revision. FAO will continue its efforts of building up a satellite account/alternate aggregates for agricultural and rural development as well as work on related areas within classifications of time use, occupation/work, SITC and resources.

4.3.2 Business and agricultural censuses and registers

World Census of Agriculture 2010

The FAO World programme for the Census of Agriculture 2010, providing guidelines for national agricultural censuses to be conducted in the decade 2006 - 2015 have been prepared and published. FAO has worked closely with UNECE in developing the relationship between the population and housing census and the agricultural census so that a common approach is included in both the Eurostat/ECE guidelines on Population and Housing Censuses and the FAO Programme. In the next two years, priority will be given to preparing a methodological review of the 2000 agricultural census programme and providing greater information on national agricultural census methodologies on the internet.

5. Strategic and managerial issues of official statistics (FAO)

5.6 Co-ordination of international statistical work

Coordination of International Statistical Work

• FAO is actively involved in the Wye City Group on Statistics on Rural Development and Agriculture Household Income. It will host the next meeting of this Group in June 2009.
• FAO leads the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) to identify the statistical needs and develop standard concepts, definitions, classifications and methodologies of the collection and collation of fishery and aquaculture statistics.
• FAO Leads the Interscretariat Working Group on Forest Sector Statistics (IWG)

5.7 Technical cooperation and capacity building programmes

Technical Assistance

Technical assistance will be provided through FAO's Technical Cooperation projects as well as through other external funded projects.
Capacity building
A Roundtable Meeting on Agricultural Census 2010 was held in Budapest, Hungary, 23-27 November 2009.
