Keynote speech by Mr Brian Pink, Australian Statistician at the occasion of the Tenth Management Seminar for the Heads of National Statistical Offices in Asia and the Pacific
This keynote speech provides the context to the challenges faced by NSOs. Starting with the fact that data is not only generated by public and private business activity but also through personal devices, the need for changing the structure of NSOs is here underlined. Indeed the data explosion, sometimes described as the era of 'big data', has increased the expectations of the users and NSOs could take advantage of the opportunity that the data deluge is offering. In order to meet these new challenges, they will need to rapidly and efficiently combine data from official statistics and a wide variety of other sources. With the constraints of limited funding and a rapidly evolving environment, NSOs need to work together to succeed in modernizing the statistical systems. Moreover by sharing the development across NSOs, significant savings can be made.
