Objectives of work:

The ITDG has a strategic role in coordinating the working groups in the field of IT for statistics in the EU.
The ITDG expresses its opinion on framework and implementing legislation prior to submitting legislative proposals to the ESSC. The ITDG provides a forum for exchange of views, and is involved at an early stage in the preparation of the annual and multi-annual programs by presenting the new statistical priorities envisaged and the possible statistical fields where simplification, reprioritization and/or phasing-out of certain work could be envisaged.
The main objective of the ITDG is to improve the cooperation between Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes.

Frequency of meetings:

Meetings are organized every year, usually once per year, in autumn.

Recent outputs:

In October 2010, the joint ESS strategy and the way forward for statistical methods and in the area of IT infrastructure and tools were discussed. Common IT infrastructure is being worked on by the ESSNets CORA and CORE for the definition of a common reference infrastructure, and by the VIP SICON on secure infrastructure for confidential data access. Eurostat is working towards making available common tools for data and metadata processing, in particular for data validation and for national reference metadata. Dissemination activities concern websites and visualisation tools as well as the use of SDMX, e.g. the HUB approach.

Main current issues / areas of work:

The main objective of the ITDG is to improve the cooperation between Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes in the area of statistical information systems and their links with related business processes. This includes moves towards a shared statistical business and information architecture, aiming at further integration of the ESS and use of common tools and services.

Expected future outputs:

• Analysis of the current and future needs in IT within the ESS
• Evaluation and discussion of strategic plans and priorities in the area of IT
• Production of regular reports and proposals to the ESSC for the evolution of IT within the ESS
• Orientation and coordination of the work of the working group: SISAI (Statistical Information Systems Architecture and Integration)
• Definition and creation of temporary task forces under the working groups to respond to Eurostat's proposals
• Definition and creation of temporary task forces under the working groups to respond to Eurostat's proposals
